Structural damage is usually the result of an environmental change, such as temperature extremes, flooding or damaged drainage, subsidence, increased weathering or property neglect.

This structural damage can manifest itself to show cracking or movement to a building. The types of cracking can be broadly divided into four main groups:

• Chemically induced size changes (e.g. cavity wall tie corrosion)
