Wall tie corrosion is affecting many properties in the uk especially in coastal and exposed locations.

The mild steel or galvanised wire ties embedded into the mortar eventually start to corrode. When this corrosion advances horizontal cracking occurs and eventually loss of stability between the skins of brickwork.

The gable of this property in Hastings fell down during strong winds because the ties had corroded through, costly re-building was necessary together with complete Wall tie replacement.

Here is an example of a wall tie which has completely corroded through, and is no longer connecting the skins of brickwork together.

When asked to carry out a wall tie inspection, we will locate wall ties using a metal detector, drill through the outer skin and inspect the ties. If required we can provide photographic evidence of the condition.
